FLYING FEET by James McCannI very much enjoyed reading James McCann's debut novel for young readers. It's a well-written, interesting, and lively story about teen Jinho who loves tae kwon do (the Korean martial art) and is quite accomplished at it. Jinho loves the control, strength, and testing of his physical limits, but the art of tae kwon do involves a philosophy and fighting prowess that functions within traditional boundaries. Jinho is becoming frustrated by these limitations. "There are always moves I stop myself from using, because they are frowned upon in my sport."One day Jinho is scouted by someone looking for fighting talent for the underground mixed martial arts arena or MMA. Jinho is soon secretly going off to fight fighters in an arena where "the gloves are off," figuratively speaking. In MMA, fighters fight it out using a combination of wrestling, boxing, kickboxing, karate, jiu-jitsu, and judo -- in short, anything goes and the philosophy of an honorable fight is not part of the picture. Jinho comes to realize that this is not the place for him and, in standing up against the Ripper, he truly finds his inner strong man.Orca Books, based in Victoria, British Columbia, has been publishing wonderful books for young and teen readers for decades. FLYING FEET is a fine addition to their Orca Sports series. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more books by Vancouver author James McCann.
