Wow, just finished and had a hard time putting it down. Sobering, thoughtful, expertly researched. In this era of troubling fake news and fake leadership, it's chillingly refreshing to be slapped awake. The story is a familiar one. Gladiatorial blood spectacle has been popular with the masses since, well forever. Money is well money. Add in a population of powerless drones to take advantage of and you have a recipe for abuse of the worst kind. Unfortunately it is abuse of our own children, both the athletes and the crowd of kids we send to school carrying our hopes and dreams.I am frankly surprised and not surprised by some of the bad reviews which did give me pause before buying the book. But I found the writing clear and engaging. Mike McIntire knows how to tell a story and a persuasively referenced one at that. So the bad reviews are folks who are connected to the University who like to pile up on a writer speaking truth to power. Well just because they are dyed in the colors, is the right stance "the U wrong or right?" What if the U is wrong, very wrong?Folks need to step back and breathe. The modern NFL is an adult activity. Yeah CTE is very scary but these men do it knowing the risks involved. Everyone has their eyes open and everyone is lawyered up. Most importantly, the services rendered are compensated for.But what the heck happened to "the academy"??? Yeah I have a close, perhaps too close connection to big college sports and a couple times I felt sickened reading this book. We all need to remember what sports is for, what college is for and protect our children and perhaps even our integrity as a society and as alums. On the other hand, if you feel that the U is for a 4 year party, grabbing as much sexy time as you can and seeing as much entertainment on the field as possible, well you'll hate this book but if you have a conscience, this book speaks to it.
